A Projector/Backprojector with Slice-to-Slice Blurring for Efficient 3D Scatter Modeling

چکیده
Scatter correction is an important factor in single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). Many scatter correction techniques, such as multiple-window subtraction and intrinsic modeling with iterative algorithms, have been under study for many years. Previously, we developed an efficient slice-to-slice blurring technique to model attenuation and system geometric response in a projectorhackprojector pair, which was used in an ML-EM algorithm to reconstruct SPECT data. This paper proposes a projector/backprojector that models the 3D first-order scatter in SPECT, also using an efficient slice-to-slice blurring technique. The scatter response is estimated from a known, non-uniform, attenuation distribution map. It is assumed that the probability of a scatter event at a pixel is proportional to the attenuation coefficient value at that pixel. Monte Carlo simulations of point-sources and a MCAT torso phantom were used to verify the accuracy of the proposed projectorhackprojector model. For a 64 x 64 x 64 image volume, it took 8.7 seconds to perform each iteration per slice, when modeling 3D scatter, attenuation, and system point response functions. The main advantage of the proposed method is its ease to implement and efficiency in computer calculation.

A Generalized Model for 3D Compton Scatter in Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography Using Slice-by-Slice Blurring and Scatter Projection Rebinning
The modeling of 3D Compton scatter in SPECT is complicated by the use of a variety of collimator geometry. To date, effective and efficient modeling of 3D Compton scatter in parallel-beam SPECT has been made possible by Frey and Tsui [1], Zeng et al [2], and Bai et al [3]. For fan-beam and cone-beam SPECT, the model in [3] can effectively model first order 3D Compton scatter. But for varying-fo...

Maxwell 3D of Ansoft software were used for this study. Ansoft’s solutions are based on a more general program using Maxwell’s equations. A simple analysis has been done for calculating the magnetic force interacted between two magnets of similar poles facing each other. The modeling in Anosoft has been described.
متن کاملA three-dimensional ray-driven attenuation, scatter and geometric response correction technique for SPECT in inhomogeneous media.
The qualitative and quantitative accuracy of SPECT images is degraded by physical factors of attenuation, Compton scatter and spatially varying collimator geometric response. This paper presents a 3D ray-tracing technique for modelling attenuation, scatter and geometric response for SPECT imaging in an inhomogeneous attenuating medium. The model is incorporated into a three-dimensional projecto...
متن کاملCalculation of the Scattered Radiation Profile in 64 Slice CT Scanners Using Experimental Measurement
Introduction: One of the most important parameters in x-ray CT imaging is the noise induced by detected scattered radiation. The detected scattered radiation is completely dependent on the scanner geometry as well as size, shape and material of the scanned object. The magnitude and spatial distribution of the scattered radiation in x-ray CT should be quantified for development of robust scatter...
متن کاملA New Approach for Quantitative Evaluation of Reconstruction Algorithms in SPECT
ABTRACT Background: In nuclear medicine, phantoms are mainly used to evaluate the overall performance of the imaging systems and practically there is no phantom exclusively designed for the evaluation of the software performance. In this study the Hoffman brain phantom was used for quantitative evaluation of reconstruction techniques. The phantom is modified to acquire t...
